The True Story of Punch-kun: A Baby Monkey's Journey
In the quiet outskirts of Tokyo, nestled among the residential neighborhoods of Ichikawa City in Chiba Prefecture, sits a small but beloved zoo — the Ichikawa Zoological and Botanical Garden (市川市動植物園). It was here, in early 2025, that a story began that would touch millions of hearts around the world.
A Difficult Beginning
A baby Japanese macaque was born to one of the zoo's resident monkey troops. The staff named him Punch (パンチ) — a strong name for what would turn out to be an incredibly resilient little monkey. But Punch's first days were anything but easy. Shortly after birth, his mother rejected him, a phenomenon that occurs occasionally in primate populations, particularly among first-time mothers or in stressful conditions.
Rejection by a primate mother is a life-threatening situation for a newborn. Baby macaques depend entirely on their mothers for warmth, nutrition, and the physical contact that is essential for their neurological development. Without intervention, rejected infants rarely survive. The zookeepers at Ichikawa knew they had to act fast.
Hand-Rearing a Macaque
The zoo's veterinary and animal care team immediately began hand-rearing Punch. This is an intensive process that requires round-the-clock feeding, careful temperature regulation, and — crucially — physical contact to simulate the maternal bonding that the baby needs for healthy development. Keepers took turns holding Punch, feeding him with specialized formula, and monitoring his vital signs through those critical first weeks.
But despite the dedicated care, Punch seemed distressed. Like all baby primates, he had a deep instinctual need to cling to something warm and soft — to hold on. The keepers noticed him reaching out constantly, grasping at blankets and the edges of his incubator. He needed something more.
The DJUNGELSKOG Moment
One of the keepers had an idea. From the nearby IKEA store, they brought in a DJUNGELSKOG — a plush orangutan toy from IKEA's jungle-themed children's collection. The name, pronounced roughly "YOONG-el-skoog," means "jungle forest" in Swedish. It's a chunky, soft, warm-toned plushie with long arms — perfect for a baby monkey to cling to.
The moment the keepers placed the DJUNGELSKOG in Punch's enclosure, something remarkable happened. Punch immediately wrapped his tiny arms around the plushie and held on tight. He buried his face in its soft fur, gripped its arm with his hands and feet, and visibly relaxed for the first time since his mother's rejection. He had found his anchor.
Going Viral
The zoo shared photos and videos of Punch with his DJUNGELSKOG on social media. The images — a tiny, vulnerable monkey clinging to a stuffed orangutan nearly twice his size — struck an emotional chord that resonated far beyond Japan. The hashtag #がんばれパンチ (Ganbare Punch — "Hang in there, Punch!") began trending on X (formerly Twitter) in Japan, then spread internationally.
Major news outlets across Japan covered the story. International media followed. Within weeks, Punch had become one of the most talked-about animals on the internet. IKEA Japan reported that DJUNGELSKOG plushies had completely sold out across the country as fans rushed to buy their own "Punch companion." The zoo saw record-breaking visitor numbers, with people traveling from across Japan just to see the little monkey and his beloved plushie.
Why It Matters
Punch's story resonates because it speaks to something universal in the human experience. We've all felt alone, rejected, or overwhelmed. And we've all had our own version of a DJUNGELSKOG — that one thing we hold onto when everything else feels uncertain. A childhood toy, a loved one's hand, a familiar song, the warmth of a blanket on a cold night.
Punch reminded the world that holding on is an act of courage, not weakness. That needing comfort doesn't make you fragile — it makes you brave enough to survive. And that sometimes, the smallest creatures can teach us the biggest lessons about resilience.
This is why we made the game. Not just because Punch's story is adorable (though it absolutely is), but because his message — hang in there — is one the world needs to hear.

Getting Started
The game runs entirely in your web browser — no downloads, no installs, no app store. Just visit hanginthere.io on any device (phone, tablet, laptop, desktop) and you're ready to play. The game automatically adapts to your screen size, so it works beautifully everywhere.
Controls
Hang In There, Punch! supports multiple input methods so you can play however you're most comfortable:
- Jump: Tap the screen, press Space, or press W
- Crouch: Swipe down, press Down Arrow, or press S
- Move Left/Right: Press Left/Right Arrow keys
On mobile, the game uses intuitive touch controls. Tap anywhere to jump, and swipe down to crouch. It's simple to learn but takes practice to master, especially when the action gets intense.
Game Modes
Story Mode takes you through Punch's journey across handcrafted jungle levels. Each chapter introduces new environments, enemies, and narrative moments. You'll progress through different zones of the jungle, meeting friends and facing increasingly challenging obstacles. Story Mode is the recommended starting point for new players — it teaches you the mechanics gradually while telling Punch's story.
Endless Mode unlocks after you complete Story Mode (or reach a certain point). This is the pure survival challenge. The jungle gets progressively harder, with obstacles appearing faster and enemies becoming more aggressive. How far can Punch go? Your score is measured in distance, and you'll compete against your own personal best.
Core Mechanics
Understanding these key systems will dramatically improve your gameplay:
- Comfort Bar: This is Punch's health, represented by a heart meter at the top of the screen. Every time Punch gets hit, his comfort drops. If it reaches zero, game over. Collect DJUNGELSKOG plushies to restore comfort!
- Friends System: As you play, you'll encounter friendly animals. Touch them to befriend them, and they'll join your squad (up to 5). Once you have all 5 friends, you earn a powerful Bodyguard Shield that protects you from damage.
- DJUNGELSKOG Plushies: These collectible plushies restore your comfort bar. They're scattered throughout the jungle, sometimes in obvious places, sometimes hidden. Never pass one up — you'll need them.
- Power-Ups: Fireflies grant temporary abilities like speed boosts, shields, and invincibility. Grab them whenever you can — they can be the difference between survival and game over.
Enemies & Obstacles
The jungle is full of dangers. Here's how to deal with the main threats:
- Bullies — Ground enemies that run toward you. Jump over them!
- Speed Demons — Faster versions of bullies. React quickly and jump early!
- Jumpers — These enemies leap into the air. Crouch under them!
💡 Pro Tip: Pay attention to enemy animations. Each enemy type has a distinct tell before they attack, giving you a split-second to react. Learning these patterns is the key to high scores.
The Boss — The Alpha
Survive long enough in either mode and you'll face The Alpha — the King of the Jungle. This is an epic boss fight with multiple phases and attack patterns. Study his moves, dodge carefully, and don't get greedy with your attacks. The Alpha is the ultimate test of everything you've learned.
Scoring
Your score is determined by several factors: distance traveled, enemies avoided, friends collected, and plushies gathered. In Endless Mode, your best score is saved locally so you can always try to beat your personal record. Share your scores with friends and challenge them to do better!

In the game, it saves you too. Never underestimate the power of something soft to hold onto.
🎮 Fun Fact: The DJUNGELSKOG plushie in the game is modeled after the real IKEA product. If you want your own Punch companion, you can find them at your local IKEA store (if they haven't sold out again!).

Tips
Tips & Tricks for Endless Mode
So you've conquered Story Mode and you're ready for the ultimate challenge — Endless Mode. This is where the real test of skill begins. The jungle gets progressively harder with each meter you travel, and only the most skilled players reach the truly impressive distances. Here are our top strategies for going further than you ever thought possible.
1. Master the Timing Window
Every enemy in the game has a specific timing window for dodging. Jump too early and you'll land on the enemy. Jump too late and you'll collide. The sweet spot is right when the enemy enters your "danger zone" — roughly 2-3 character widths away. Practice this timing until it becomes muscle memory. The best players don't react — they predict.
2. Prioritize Comfort Management
Your comfort bar is your lifeline. In Endless Mode, damage accumulates fast, so managing your comfort is crucial:
- Never skip a plushie. Even if it means a slightly risky maneuver, the comfort restoration is almost always worth it.
- Avoid unnecessary risks when your comfort is low. Play conservatively until you find a plushie.
- Learn plushie spawn patterns. They tend to appear after clusters of enemies, rewarding you for surviving tough sequences.
3. Build Your Friend Squad Early
Collecting all 5 jungle friends gives you the Bodyguard Shield, which is incredibly valuable in Endless Mode. Focus on befriending characters whenever they appear — the shield can absorb hits that would otherwise end your run. Once activated, the shield absorbs a set number of hits before breaking. Use it wisely.
4. Know When to Crouch vs. Jump
One of the most common mistakes new players make is always jumping. Different enemies require different responses:
- Ground enemies (Bullies, Speed Demons): Jump over them
- Air enemies (Jumpers): Crouch under them
When enemies come in mixed groups, you need to quickly identify each type and respond appropriately. This is where most runs end — in the split-second decision between jumping and crouching.
5. Use the Speed System
The game gradually increases speed as you progress. Don't fight this — embrace it. Higher speed means higher scores per second. The trick is to stay calm as the pace increases. Take deep breaths, keep your focus soft (looking at the middle of the screen rather than fixating on one point), and trust your reflexes. Panic is your biggest enemy in Endless Mode.
6. Learn Enemy Patterns
While Endless Mode has randomized elements, there are recognizable patterns in how enemies spawn. After many runs, you'll start noticing sequences: a bully followed by a jumper, or a speed demon preceded by a brief gap. These patterns become predictable with enough experience. Keep playing, and your subconscious will start recognizing them before your conscious mind does.
7. The "Zen State" Method
Experienced players describe reaching a "zen state" during long runs where reactions become automatic and effortless. To reach this state:
- Play in a quiet environment with minimal distractions
- Use headphones — the audio cues help with timing
- Don't look at your score during the run (it causes anxiety)
- Focus on the next obstacle, not the one after that
- Accept that every run will eventually end — remove the pressure of "this has to be THE run"
🏆 Challenge: Try to beat your personal best by 100m each session. Small, incremental improvements add up to massive distances over time. The best Endless Mode players didn't get there in one day — they improved gradually, run after run.
8. Revive Wisely
If the game offers a revive opportunity (via watching a short ad), consider the circumstances. It's worth reviving if you're on a potentially record-breaking run and you're past your previous best. But if you're still in the early stages, it might be better to start fresh and save the revive for when it really counts.
Keep Going!
Remember: every great Endless Mode score started with a player who thought "there's no way I can beat that." The game is designed to be challenging but fair — every death teaches you something. Review what went wrong, adjust your strategy, and try again. Just like the real Punch, the secret is simple: hang in there.
